Gaming on mobile phones and tablets is big business. Research suggests smartphone users dedicate 39 per cent of their time to games when using their handset; tablet users 67 per cent, and games continue to be Apple’s biggest selling software on its App Store.

Some of the world’s biggest gaming publishers, formerly dedicated to games consoles alone, are now revealing their intentions to focus in on the market. Such companies include EA, publishers of massive sporting titles such as the ‘Fifa’ series, and Square Enix; a company whose pedigree is in creating lengthy and immersive gaming experiences in games that include the critically acclaimed ‘Final Fantasy’ franchise. Even Disney is going to make a splash into the mobile gaming market in a big way, according recent reports.

However, while this is great news for gamers, gaming apps don’t come neatly packaged in a box with instructions – they need to be downloaded.

Getting games on to your handset

Having a connection to the internet is of vital importance when it comes to getting the latest games. While yes, it is possible to download games and apps to a computer before then moving it to a phone, this is time consuming and arduous. No one wants to wait for a download and then take the time to upload immediately after. People are used to walking around, sitting in cafés, and wanting their apps right then and then, on demand – is this too much to ask?

Moreover, a lot of games need to regularly update, which means you’ll once again need your internet connection – whether that be a wired connection to a computer - so that you can repeat the download/upload process, or through mobile internet and wifi, to update wirelessly.

Why choose Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is infinitely better at carrying out the task of downloading and installing apps to your phone. For a start, most games simply won’t let you download them to your phone over a 3G mobile internet connection. That’s because as mobile gaming graphics, and the length of mobile gaming experiences, increases, you’re going to need to download much larger files to your device.

Built-in locks, preventing large downloads (20Mb+) via the mobile internet are there to protect you, the user, and your data plan. It’s also because these internet signals are more intermittent and less predictable than a solid wifi connection. This means that you might not be able to download your app in a single session.

What would happen without wifi?

Let’s think for a minute of the consequences should these restrictions on your mobile internet allowance be lifted – or if your phone doesn’t impose any restrictions at all. If you are a heavy gamer, or just someone who likes checking out new apps, you could end up downloading 20 games/apps of 10Mb each in a month. If you did this via 3/4G, this would claim just under half of your data plan on a 500Mb allowance – pretty steep.

What’s worse is that even if are you able to download any of the biggest and most well-received games out there, such as ‘Infinity Blade’ by Chair/Epic, you could wipe out a whole 1Gb of your allowance in one sitting!

Wifi also enables you to play multiplayer gaming experiences against your friends, or other international stranger gamers, without fear you’re going to run out of connection should you be on the move, in a train, or coach, for example.
